In this guide, we will talk about everything from scratch, which means there are no prerequisites to this guide, and we will consider you an absolute beginner in this field. So, without any delay, let’s start this guide!

How To Create 3D Animation: Step By Step Guide

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to create 3D animation from the beginner’s level.

Idea

The first and most essential thing is that you have an idea of what you want to create. This is even before sketching or storyboarding, and This would be entirely yours and new and unique. All the other things will be the same as everyone else. If you think you can start without an idea and you will find it along the way, then this could end up a total disaster.

How to Create a Storyboard

After you have your idea and script ready, create a storyboard. In a storyboard, you draw all the scenes you want in your animation. This is also an excellent approach; almost all animators use this. It will allow you to save time, and you will remember how you planned your animation.

Even in corporate animation, we create storyboards so that we can get an excellent final product without missing out on anything,

Modeling

Modeling is the creation of the main characters and elements in your animation. It is done with the help of mathematics, and each element is designed with each vertex and edge correctly measured. This is done using special software such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, or Z-Brush. This is mandatory for 3D rendering later on. This is also the future of 2D animation.

Texture

After the project has finished the design phase, it is time for texturing the elements and characters. Texturing is the creation of the outer layers of objects. This is the final touch. For example, if you’re creating a superhero, you will design his hairstyle, beard, skin color, and other similar items in the texture phase.

Rigging

Rigging is the next step, which involves the construction of the moving body parts of the character or objects. This includes your character’s muscles and how you want them to move when your character is moving. In other words, it is the construction of the muscular-skeletal foundation of your animation.

Sound Design

Skinning is done after rigging but is considered a single step because you only work on the same thing. In skinning, you’ll cover the skeleton of your character with skin.

Animation

After you’re done with your character, it is time to utilize the storyboard you created in the second step. Now, you can open your animation software, import the character you’ve made in the above steps, and start creating scenes.

This is the most crucial step; getting it right should be your primary focus. Learning about this in detail would be best to become a good animator. Check out our other blogs to learn more about animation and its elements.

Render

After you complete the animation, you move on to rendering. In this step, the static images are transformed into animation. This is done solely by your system’s graphics card, and a sound graphics card is needed for this purpose. In this step, you can add other aspects, like the motion blur, shadows, reflection, etc.

Compositing

You need more than one render to get your final working animation. The rendering is done repeatedly to get the best shadows, skins, motion, etc. This multiple attempt of rendering is called compositing. This is the last step, and after this, the part of the animation is done.

After you’re done with animation, the next step is to move to music and sounds for the animation. The voice artists record audio in the studio while watching the animation to get the proper synchronization and sound effects.

Recording a background score is also needed for most animations. It is also composed in this step.

Edit

In the edit phase, you see and check all the elements of your animation. You cut or add things in your animation, check whether the sound is okay, and perform other checks.

Last Render

After your editing, you render for the last time. This is the last touch you make in your production phase, and then when this render is complete, you have your final product.

Choosing The Right Platform

Here are a few platforms on which you can upload your stuff to start earning from your 3D animated series.

YouTube

YouTube is a public-use platform; you can upload your content here for free. People would also watch your content for free, but the platform will pay you depending on the watch time your content gets. It also depends on several other factors, such as no. of subscribers, your location, and the location of your audience.

Vimeo

Vimeo works similarly to YouTube but is more focused on filmmaking and made for filmmakers. The only difference is that people will need a password to watch your content. Most content creators use this for exclusive content and charge and permit them to watch it.

Netflix

If you want your content on Netflix, you must work through a proper network. You will need an agent and an appropriate team for your project and then contact netflix to upload your content. If they like your content, they will sign an agreement with you to work with them.
